Your 10-Second Guide to the Latest VIC Job Data | Jan-Mar 2018

Victoria is a great place to work because it’s not only Australia’s second largest economy but it’s culturally vibrant with gorgeous architecture and a reputation for great cafes, restaurants and coffee!  It also benefits from a rich diversity of industries, a strong research and innovation culture and one of the world’s finest political, regulatory and financial regimes.

Below is JobGetter’s 10-second guide to the latest VIC job data from 1 January through 14 March 2018…

Where the Jobs Are in VIC

The above map shows where VIC employers are publicly advertising open positions from 1 January – 14 March 2018 throughout Victorian across all job sites.

This VIC job data reveals where employers are currently looking for workers. While it is unsurprising to see the heaviest recruiting happening in major metro areas like Melbourne, what is interesting is the large amount of regional advertisement.

Top Industries / Job Categories Recruiting across VIC

The above graph shows the top job categories that have the most advertised jobs from 1 January – 14 March 2018 throughout Victoria across all job sites.

Traditionally classified as industries, JobGetter analyses the skills and expertise required to determine which job category an advertised role belongs to which provides a more accurate picture of which areas are in demand. For instance, Admin and Office Support is the top skill set in demand across Victoria since the start of 2018. This crosses many industries from Real Estate to Mining so what is evident is that if you’re skilled in Office Administration, you’re an in-demand worker. Or, if you’re a recruiter looking for Admin roles, you’ve got some fierce competition.

What’s important to understand when interpreting this data is that it’s only reflective of what is being publicly advertised. It does not capture jobs recruited internally, without advertisement, in shop windows or by word of mouth otherwise known as the hidden job market; although, JobGetter hopes to bring this data into our data set in future.

Top Roles in Demand in VIC

The above graph shows the top roles that have been advertised the most from 1 January – 14 March 2018 throughout Victoria across all job sites.

These top roles in demand in Victoria are not necessarily the roles experiencing the biggest growth at the moment. What they are, however, are jobs that are being heavily advertised for, so it’s what employers want. Jobs like Administration Assistants and Administration Officer are currently being heavily targeted by companies in Victoria as well as Customer Service Assistants, Receptionists, Labouriers and Cafe All Rounders. Recruitments drives for Retail Sales Assistants are also well underway. What this means for you is that if you are considering a position in one of these top roles most in demand then now is one of the best times to look and apply. On the other hand, if you’re an employer looking to hire, you may need to pull out the magic to stand out in a crowded market and attract the best candidates.

Traditionally, job demand is reported by keywords on a one-to-one basis. JobGetter is unique in our ability to identify relationships between roles, skills and qualifications which helps us to provide a more accurate picture of the job market. For instance, JobGetter understands that Administration Assistant is synonymous with General Office Administration, Clerical Officer, Office All Rounder and the like.
