The three main centres within the region are all situated on major highways with Canberra 1.5 hours from Cooma and Sydney just over 4 hours away. Education is important within these communities and major centres boast both public and private schools. Tertiary education is catered for at the Cooma Campus of Illawarra TAFE and at the innovative Snowy Monaro Country University Centre which allows students to complete degrees without the need to move from their home base.
Snowy Monaro has the highest mountain range in Australia with a wealth of snow based activities, mountain biking tracks, miles of waterways for fishing and paddling, gyms and swimming pools, golf courses, pony clubs … the list goes on and on.
The well-established industries of this region are tourism, agriculture and timber. As they continue to evolve, they encourage the development of supportive industries such as welding, fabrication and engineering where employment needs continue to grow.
